Back to School Day

Celebrating 110 years of Mortuary Science at the U!

Please join us on campus November 2, 2018 at Coffman Memorial Union as we celebrate 110 years of mortuary science education at the University of Minnesota.  We have planned a number of exciting events to celebrate the day:

  • Five hours of free continuing education activities (Approved MN CEU credits)
  • An “open house” event for prospective students, alumni, and friends
  • A reception to celebrate Michael Mathews’ 42 years of service to the University

Come for the entire day, attend a few CEU sessions then help out at the open house, or come just for the reception; either way we'd love to see you!

CEU Session 1: 12:00PM – 12:50PM

CEU Session 1: 12:00PM – 12:50PM
Michael Mathews:  A Comparison of the FTC Funeral Rule with Minnesota 149a Funeral Practice Law.
(1 MN CEU unit, Regulation and Ethics category)

The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Funeral Rule was adopted and put into law in 1984.  In 1996, the state of Minnesota re-wrote Statute 149, blending the Federal funeral rule and Minnesota mortuary science regulations into a new law, MN Statute 149A.  In doing so, Minnesota added price lists and wording to the required disclosures that are mandated by the FTC.  This session will compare and contrast the differences between Minnesota and FTC requirements relating to funeral practice.

CEU Session 2: 1:00PM – 1:50PM

CEU Session 2: 1:00PM – 1:50PM

CEU Session 2: 1:00PM – 1:50PM
Giselle Wynia: Preparation Room Safety
(1 MN CEU unit, Body Preparation, Care, or Handling category)

This session will provide general guidelines for preparation room safety ranging from engineering controls and safe work practices, such as ventilation and instrument handling.  For those who work with students and interns, a portion will also cover a student’s perspective on safety in the prep room. This will help funeral directors understand how our students are trained to be safe in the preparation room and properly use PPEs.

CEU Session 3: 2:00PM – 2:50PM

CEU Session 3: 2:00PM – 2:50PM

CEU Session 3: 2:00PM – 2:50PM
Marc Markell:  Grief and People with Cognitive Disabilities
(1 MN CEU unit, Professional Practices category)

This session will address issues of people with cognitive disabilities and their unique needs as they grieve the death of a significant person. It will also address issues of what a funeral director can do to make sure that all mourners are included and able to benefit from the funeral or memorial service.

CEU Session 4: 3:00PM – 4:50PM

CEU Session 4: 3:00PM – 4:50PM

CEU Session 4: 3:00PM – 4:50PM
Michael LuBrant:  Minnesota’s Mortuary Science Workforce: Changes and Trends Affecting Professional Practice
(2 MN CEU units, Regulation and Ethics category)

Assuming it is accurate that “50% of all mortuary science graduates leave the profession within five years of graduation,” how must funeral service evolve to attract and retain a sufficient number of skilled employees to meet current and future workforce needs?  In this session, we will consider changing demographics and work preferences of mortuary science students in the context of contemporary funeral practice.  In preparation for an updated Program survey about Minnesota’s mortuary science workforce, attendees will actively participate in the development of research questions related to workforce issues and regulatory policy development.
